Macro Observations and Market Analysis
This Month’s Performance
The Fund returned -4.32% in July (S&P 500 +2.24%). Most of the drawdown came in the final days of the month as cross-asset volatility increased, with macro exposures (primarily Copper) detracting more than equities added. Energy helped cushion the move, but not enough to offset the broader risk.
In keeping with our risk-management playbook, we cut gross exposure into the selloff, prioritized liquidity, and preserved flexibility for redeployment as conditions stabilize. Year-to-date performance stands at +4.73%, with +14.39% (annualized) since inception. We continue to believe that the portfolio’s dual-strategy design can be additive over a full cycle by sourcing equity-like returns from non-correlated drivers.
July: Flat Performance Until the Last Two Days
Market returns are log-normally distributed. Sometimes you lose in a day what you would expect to lose in a bad month. That’s pretty much what happened in July. Our performance was perfectly flat for the month up until the last two days, when we lost close to 9% (in the global macro side, 5.35% for the fund overall as stocks were also down slightly) over a two-day span. Although not enjoyable, the moves were not unprecedented given how markets can behave at times.
What happened?
What did we do in response?
What do we believe moving forward?
Three themes: two that we are all talking about, and one that is being completely missed
Figure 1: Source: Nonconsensus calculations
Wage gains have atrophied, and tariffs are likely to be a drag on growth rather than a catalyst for an inflationary impulse.
Negative growth impacts from the tariffs (orange bars above) will have a more pronounced impact on growth moving forward than the positives from tax cuts and fiscal spending (navy bars) in the BBB (Big Beautiful Bill).
Figure 2: Source: Pantheon Macro
Given China’s dominance in global manufacturing, the implications are bullish for commodities in general, from polysilicon and cement to aluminum, copper, and silver. Note that this development is structural in nature and should support our copper and silver positions over a multi-year horizon, whereas Trump’s tariff whims are creating volatility on a very near-term basis. It’s news like this from the world’s leading producer and consumer of commodities that augments our existing bullish conviction despite the uncertainty created by U.S. policymakers.
We look forward to updating you again in September. Please feel free to reach out if we can provide additional clarification on specific ideas, or the portfolio more broadly.
As always, we continue to be nimble. If the data and/or our views change, we can pivot our positioning and find other trades within the 40+ markets we have available. This is also why we maintain a strategic allocation to U.S. equities in our overall fund strategy, balancing a buy-and-hold approach with active global macro long/short positions.
We Are Here To Help

** In 2022 Liz Truss, Britain’s Prime Minister, announced a “mini-budget” that included unfunded deficits that no longer seem outrageous in hindsight, particular given the U.S. deficit in recent years. However, it happened to be the proverbial “straw that broke the camel’s back”, and the pound plummeted while U.K long-end rates screamed higher. Truss had to backtrack quickly and was out of office a few weeks later.
